Peewee Reps take Lucan Tournament Championship
This past week-end was a very exciting one for the Twin Centre Peewee Rep team as we went undefeated in 5 games to win the tournament!
Peewee Reps were in the 10th Annual Ken Baily Memorial Tournament held in Lucan Ontario from Oct 17-20th.
The structure of the tournament was a "Points per Period" style format for the first 3 games. This gave each team a chance to earn 5 points in each game. 1 point for scoring more goals in a period and 2 points if you win the game. Tying a period gives you a half point.
The first game was against East Lambton. After falling behind 2 - 0 in the first period, an amazing pass by Cameron Hoy to Tyler Munro sprung him on a breakaway and Tyler scored to get us on the board. Daniel Rudy scored a beauty from a great feed from Brock Krulicki to tie it up at 2 and then Curtis Butler scored the game winner with just under 3 minutes to go in the third to win it. 3-2 victory. We earned 4 out of 5 points for this game. Brett Springer earned Player of the game with his sensational timely saves and very calm demeanour between the pipes.
The second game was against Blenheim. Daniel Rudy opened the scoring from Curtis Butler and Blair Bender late in the first. Tyler Munro put us up by 2 with the assist going to Aidan Krueger. Blenheim scored shortly after to close the gap to 1. With 2 minutes left in the third, Daniel Rudy scored the insurance goal from Tyler Munro. 3-1 victory. Once again, Brett Springer shut the door with huge saves throughout the game not giving Blenheim much to build off of. We earned 4.5 points for this game. Daniel Rudy earned "Player of the Game" honours.
The third game was against South Huron. Curtis Butler opened the scoring half way through the first assisted from Alex Kaufman. South Huron scored shortly after to tie it up. In the second, Aidan Krueger scored to put us up by 1 assisted by Blair Bender. Alex Kaufman then put us up by 2 with a nice feed from Aiden Krueger on a 2 on 1. 7 seconds later South Huron scored to but the lead back to 1. Tyler Zyta scored a late one in the third, assisted by Daniel Rudy and Curtis Butler to insure the 4-2 victory. The defense played amazing in this one, not giving South Huron many chances and making very smart plays in our end. Josh Monk and Jacob Voisin kept their forwards to the outside and made sure there was pucks around our net. William Weber and Dylan Burton made many D to D passes and made some stretch passes which created some scoring chances. We earned 4.5 points giving us first place in our pool and advancing us to the semi-finals VS Lucan.
In the semi-final game vs Lucan, it was a high tempo, intensity filled physical battle. Our Captain Aidan Krueger scored the opening goal early in the first assisted by Josh Monk and Jacob Viosin. Half way through the first, Brett Springer made around 5-6 huge saves right after the other and kept them to nothing. This was the difference in the game. Shutting them down in the first, agitated Lucan and they became frustrated and started to take penalties. Lucan scored late in the second to tie the game up at 1. In the third, things continued to be physical. We kept our discipline and they took a penalty early in the third in which Daniel Rudy scored a huge and potential winning goal on. William Weber picked up the assist. With around 8 minutes left while we were short-handed, Blair Bender, sacrificed himself for the team and blocked a huge slap shot from their top player. This block shot not only prevented a good scoring chance for Lucan but demonstrated Blair's dedication to the team and his team mates. Blair ended going to the hospital to get his ankle checked out and thankfully there was nothing broken and he will need to rest it for a few days. With the score 2-1 for us, with 3 minutes left, Curtis Butler scored the insurance goal to make it 3-1. Aidan Krueger got the assist. Despite a late surge by Lucan, causing us to take a few necessary penalties on good scoring chances, Brett Springer held the fort and we advanced to the finals VS Mitchell. Brett Springer and Blair Bender were both given Players of the game.
In the final VS Mitchell, the shape of the game was very different from the game VS Lucan. There were no penalties called against either team as opposed to 6 each in the Lucan game. Mitchell opened the scoring early in the first on a bad bounce. 3 minutes later, William Weber slid the puck over to Daniel Rudy who put it home and tied the game up. The boys started to take shape in the second scoring 3 times. 1. Aiden Krueger from Cameron Hoy 2. Tyler Munro from Aidan Krueger and Josh Monk and 3. Alex Kaufman from Jacon Voisin. Now leading 4-1, Mitchell started to take the play to us and scored a goal with 5 minutes left to get back into it making 4-2. With 54 seconds left, Mitchell scored again to make it 4-3. They called their time out and pulled their goalie. They continued to push but Brett Springer and the rest of the boys made sure there was nothing more and the game ended up 4-3 and the Championship was ours. Brett Springer was named Player of the Tournament by the players.
The players made the parents and coaches proud of their effort and sportsmanship through out the tournament.
